What is SCDS?

SCDS ratings roughly describe how much synthesis was used to make a piece of content, particularly regarding generative AI usage.

The score does not describe the quality of a product.

Why it matters

Clients of any product online want to know if AI was used in the creation process, and more importantly, what AI was used for. A SCDS rating is an easy-to-get disclosure for your material that satisfies that need in an easy-to-understand way.

Rating scale

Ratings range from no synthetic material to an almost entirely synthetic product.

A plus rating

A+

No synthetic content was used.

A minus rating

A−

Non-AI synthetic content was used, or AI was used for ideation.

B plus rating

B+

AI has a very minor role in the final product, but does not appear to the user or client.

B minus rating

B−

AI has been used in the final product, but only partially; it is mixed with what is otherwise still mostly human-made content. Everything generated with AI is also based on human content.

C rating

C

AI is used for entire features or parts, while some parts remain human-made.

Q rating

Q

AI is used for most of the product, based on human-made development content.

Z rating

Z

The final product is entirely (or almost entirely) synthetic from generative AI.

How scoring works

You can get a rating determined by answering a handful of simple questions. Each question has different answers that give different points, and the total points in the end determines your final score. Some questions might also determine minimum or maximum ratings, which affect the score bounds.

12pointsA+no synthetic content
0pointsZalmost entirely synthetic

A conflicting set of answers produces a U rating (undetermined), meaning the questionnaire should be reviewed or retaken. This tool is a disclosure aid, not a certification.
